Andrew Schank is ready to take on a new role as a member of the Blair City Council.

Schank, a member of the Blair Planning Commission, defeated Robert Pearson 507 to 398 votes in the Ward 2 council race.

“When we were out campaigning, going door to door and putting signs out, I knew I couldn't take anything for granted because Bob has been here a long time and people know Bob,” said Schank, who has lived in Blair for 10 years. “I just tried to run on the issues that I wanted to run on. When the election results came in, I was really surprised.”

Pearson, who was running for office for the first time, congratulated his opponent on his win.

“I'm sure he'll do a good job,” Pearson said.

Schank said he was “humbled” by the victory.

“It's a great opportunity to serve our community and we just want to be a help,” he said. “That's why we ran.”

Schank, who has served on the planning commission for two years, is hoping to use his experience to help the community move forward.

“I've been watching and going to council meetings for years. I've been watching and participating to a certain degree at a distance,” he said. “Now, rather than in the public forum saying something, now that I have an idea or have a suggestion or have an opportunity, I can vote on something or suggest something and there would be a little more traction.”

Schank thanked voters for their support.

“ I just want to thank everybody who participated in Ward 2 whether you voted for me or for Bob,” he said. “Everybody who participated and everybody who voted for me I'm very grateful. It's an honor, it's a big responsibility and I don't take it lightly.”

Council members Chris Jensen (Ward 1), Mindy Rump (Ward 3) and Marty Shepard (Ward 4) all ran unopposed and retained their seats.
