The Fort Calhoun Pioneers lost their first two games of the new season against top-10 girls basketball teams.
Coach Marty Plum's squad lost 63-32 contest to Class D1 No. 4 Fremont Bergan on Friday before Saturday's 56-24 loss to Class C1 No. 10 Syracuse. Full-court Rockets pressure caused problems early during the latter.
“We weren't able to swing (the ball) and the middle was blocked off, which was where we were trying to go,” sophomore Bria Bench said.
One of the times the Pioneers were successful, though, the 5-foot-10 forward scored a layup. She finished with six points in the first quarter before finishing with 11 total. Senior Tess Skelton added eight in defeat, while Syracuse's Lily Vollertsen scored a game-high 21 points.
“I think we need to be more confident and move the ball better,” Bench said after exiting the locker room.
A day earlier, Fort Calhoun started its season at home against Bergan, falling by 31. Coach Plum's squad fell behind 15-2 after one period and 36-12 at halftime. It scored its quarter high during the 13-13 third.
Skelton led the Pioneers with 11 points, while Maddy Tinkham notched 10 and Bench scored nine. Dala Drowne scored a bucket, too.
Adisyn Mendlik and Kaitlyn Mlnarik led Bergan with 12 points each.
After two games against ranked foes to start the season, the FCHS Pioneers' home stand continues 6 p.m. today against Omaha Concordia.
