Justin Myer broke a coach's single-season strikeout record Tuesday, leading the Fort Calhoun baseball team past Thurston-Cuming County 6-4.
The Pioneers improved to 7-9 with the home win as their pitcher logged 11 strikeouts, pushing his season total to 53. That number is eight more than assistant coach Brennan Clausen accumulated for Calhoun in 2017.
Myer's fourth pitching win of the spring also ties him with Trae Bradburn and Payton Griesert for the school record as well. Bradburn won four in 2014 before Griesert pulled even in 2015.
Offensively against Thurston County, FCHS' Austin Welchert went 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
FCHS falls to Devils in extras
The Pioneers started their homestand Monday with an 11-inning game against Class B No. 9 Plattsmouth.
The Blue Devils outscored FCHS 3-1 during the decisive final frame, earning an 18-16 victory. They notched 18 hits, while coach Roy Prauner's logged 17 in defeat.
Jake Seina led the Pioneers with five hits, four RBIs and an eight-strikeout effort on the mound, according to stats kept by Plattsmouth. Zach Faucher added four hits and Tylan Conner scored three runs.
FCHS led 2-1 after one inning and 12-8 after five. Its eight-run fifth inning was answered by a seven-run top of the sixth from Plattsmouth.
To even the score again, though, the Pioneers scored three during the bottom half of the sixth. Those runs — which made the score 15-all — were the game's last until the 11th inning.
