The Fort Calhoun track and field season began Thursday against tough competition at Platteview High School.
The Pioneers scored just 20 total team points, while the Waverly boys and girls scored 141 and 135.5 to sweep the meet titles.
Despite their 20 points, FCHS earned top-five finishes in six events. Dala Drowne led the way with a third-place finish in the girls' 400-meter dash, stopping the clock in 1:06.6.
Jacob Rupp, Wyatt Appel and Bria Bench also earned top-five finishes in individual competition. Rupp was fifth during both the 1,600 and 3,200 runs, while Bench was fourth in her 2-mile race and Appel claimed fourth in the high jump. The latter cleared 5 feet, 8 inches.
The Fort Calhoun boys' 3,200-meter relay team was fifth to start Thursday's running events, too. Rupp, Appel, Lance Olberding and John McKennan combined for that effort, clocking in at 9:15.1.
The Pioneers next compete 10 a.m. Thursday at the Douglas County West Invitational.
