Pioneers lose 3 volleyball matches at Tekamah

FCHS works on coverage and communication

Sophomore libero Ruby Garmong said the Fort Calhoun volleyball team's Saturday goals were court coverage and communication at Tekamah-Herman High School.
The Pioneers played three matches during the Tigers' tournament, finishing 0-for-3. They lost the final game they played against the hosts, 25-17 and 25-13.
FCHS trailed just 18-17 during the first set against Tekamah before the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to take a 1-0 advantage. When asked what the Pioneers could have done to avoid that finish, a familiar talking point came up.
“Having a more positive attitude, definitely,” she said before mentioning one of Calhoun's goals. “And coverage.”
The Tigers led all the way through the first set despite service aces by Raegen Wells and Tilden Nottleman. Megan Braymen's unreturned serve pulled FCHS within 18-16, too.
The second set wasn't as close, though. Despite kills by Ellie Collins, Bailee Spencer and Grace Genoways, the Pioneers trailed 22-12 going into the final stretch.
When asked who came to play and performed well Saturday, coach Sarah Rangel mentioned Garmong. The sophomore has earned more-and-more varsity play as the season's gone along.
“Just putting all of my effort in,” Garmong said when asked how she believes she's earned her spot on the floor.
Before its game with Tekamah, FCHS lost 2-0 matches to both Omaha Roncalli and BRLD. Roncalli beat coach Rangel's squad first, 25-12 and 25-15, before BRLD won 25-12, 25-9.
The Pioneers are 2-12 this season. They next play 7 p.m. Thursday at Ashland-Greenwood.

Pioneers lose at Raymond Central
Fort Calhoun lost a 3-0 Thursday night match at Raymond Central, too.
The Mustangs won 25-13, 25-8 and 25-11. The loss was the Pioneers' ninth of the season.
Garmong led FCHS with 26 digs, while Spencer notched 10. Olivia Quinlan had three blocks in defeat.
