The Fort Calhoun girls basketball team wasn't pleased with how it played during Tuesday's home defeat.
Coach Marty Plum's team lost to Yutan, 43-20, falling to 1-4 this season. The Chieftains, meanwhile, improved to 1-4 with the road win.
“(Coach) always says that, 'You can lose or get beat,'” Pioneers senior Kenzie Hansen said. “Tonight we lost, we didn't get beat. We handed it to them.”
FCHS — which was playing without injured starter Tess Skelton — opened with a 7-4 lead before Yutan took control. Pioneers freshman Maddy Tinkham knocked down a baseline jumper off of a pass from Abbie Anderson during her team's first possession.
Hansen then added a 3-point make, and Anderson scored her own bucket, before the Chieftains went on an 8-0 run to seize control away. Overall, the visitors outscored their hosts 39-13 after Fort Calhoun notched its largest lead of the ballgame — three points.
“Tessa got hurt and so we're kind of learning how to play without her,” Hansen said. “We didn't fully trust each other throughout the game.”
The senior guard said Wednesday's practice was going to be an important one for the Pioneers.
“We need to come in and have a new mindset,” she said.
Hansen led coach Plum's team with seven points, while Tinkham had six and Raegen Wells notched five. Ellie Lloyd led Yutan with nine.
Fort Calhoun next plays Saturday against Plattsmouth.
