Not a lot of open looks

FCHS boys drop home game to Yutan, 37-17

Points were hard to come by Tuesday as the Fort Calhoun boys basketball team lost its third-straight game after a 2-0 start.
“Just not a lot of open looks tonight for anyone on the team,” junior Grayson Bouwman said after the 37-17 home loss to Yutan.
Declyn Otte scored the Pioneers' first bucket with less than 20 seconds left in the first period. FCHS later trailed 23-6 at halftime when the Chieftains scored 10 unanswered going into the break.
Colby Bentley's third-quarter score finally put coach TJ O'Connor's squad into double figures, but Calhoun still trailed 25-11. The freshman's second bucket capped the quarter's scoring with his team down 12 points.
Senior Zach Nelson's fourth-period score briefly pulled the Pioneers within eight points, 25-17. Freshman Adam Elofson stole the ball at midcourt, got it to Bouwman and watched as the junior assisted Nelson on what wound up as their team's final bucket.
Yutan scored the last 12 points of the game, improving to 3-1 with the 20-point victory.
“We just have to keep practicing and getting better,” Bouwman said. “Things will start clicking again.”
He scored four points — the same total produced by both Otte and Bentley — while Nelson led the home team with five. FCHS next competes 5 p.m. Saturday at Bancroft-Rosalie.
Nolan Timm, meanwhile, led the visiting Chieftains with a game-high 20 points Tuesday. The guard hit two 3-pointers to go with his seven buckets from inside the arc.
