It took the Class C1 No. 9 Fort Calhoun boys basketball team just 2 minutes, 43 seconds to build a 10-point lead Thursday at Tekamah-Herman High School.
The Pioneers led 22-6 after one period, 40-20 after two and won by 25, 76-51, on the Tigers' new gymnasium floor. Coach TJ O'Connor's team improved to 16-4 with the victory before Friday's 69-40 win over Raymond Central pushed its season record to 17-4.
Leading FCHS against Tekamah was sophomore Grayson Bouwman, who finished with a team-high 26 points. The guard scored 10 during the first quarter, including six on 3-point makes. Carsen Schwarz, Owen Newbold and Glenn Hunter also made shots as the Pioneers took off to a fast start.
Calhoun's first-half advantage hit its height when coach TJ O'Connor's lineup went on a 9-0 scoring run. Newbold hit a 3-pointer and Austin Welchert secured two steals, scoring on one and getting the ball to Hunter for another bucket.
Zane Schwarz's 2-point basket capped the score at 31-8, a deficit the Tigers wouldn't come close to overcoming.
In addition to Bouwman's 26, which included four 3s, Carsen Schwarz scored 14 points and Hunter had 11. Zane Schwarz added 10 points and Newbold had nine, respectively.
Brock Rogers, meanwhile, led Tekamah with 15 points as the Tigers fell to 6-15.
Against Raymond Central, both Bouwman and Carsen Schwarz scored 21 points at home. Zane Schwarz added 10 as the Pioneers outscored the Mustangs 39-18 during the second half.
