The Blair boys soccer team believes its 5-0 start caught the attention of its competition.
“We've got to treat every game like we're playing a big team because everyone's coming out after us,” junior Elias Cortez said.
The Class B No. 6 Bears passed Monday's test against Nebraska City, 2-1, and routed Plattsmouth 10-0 Tuesday. Now, coach Curt Scott's team is 7-0 with its most recent wins coming at Krantz Field.
Against the Pioneers, Cortez scored twice despite limited minutes as he works his way back from an injury earlier this season. His first goal came during the 25th minute on a long shot from just outside the box. The laser off of his foot splashed into the back of the net.
“I've always practiced those, but I don't expect them to go in during a game, you know?” Cortez said. “The feeling was crazy.”
The Bears went into the half ahead 1-0 and added to their lead during the 60th minute. That time, Cortez won the ball in the box, keeping it away from Nebraska City's defense before he was able to score it. The junior credits indoor soccer experience for his ballhandling skills in traffic.
“That helps a lot,” he said.
Goalkeeper Mark Donner and his BHS defenders allowed a Pioneer goal during the 65th minute, but held on for the win from there.
The next night, against Plattsmouth, the Bears earned a shutout. Coach Scott's team led 8-0 at halftime and won by 10 when all was said and done.
Gabe Zurek scored three goals for BHS, while Victor Dufau and Shay Bailey notched two apiece. Kip Tupa, Cortez and Zyler Wyman added one each, too.
The Bears were scheduled to face Ralston on Thursday and will begin Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament play early next week.
