The Blair boys basketball team made 10 3-pointers and scored 60 points against a 1-3-1 Wahoo zone defense that has allowed that many points just four times through 12 games this season.
Still, the 5-5 Bears came up just short Tuesday at home against the Class C1 No. 4 Warriors, 67-60.
“This team has so much talent and potential,” BHS senior Cade Ulven said afterward. “It's time now to put it all together and start winning — refusing to lose.”
Wahoo's Trevor Kasischke and Garrett Grandgenett combined for 43 points during their team's 10th win of the season, but Kip Tupa's 3-pointer to start the third period cut the Warriors' lead to just one, 32-31.
A big defensive block by Ulven followed, but a 10-0 Wahoo run gave it firm control as its defense forced Blair turnovers in important stretches.
“Little sloppy,” Bears junior Sawyer Lawton said.
Coach Chris Whitwer's team scored 60, but it could have had more in the guard's opinion.
“I thought we could of done better,” he said. “Could have made more shots. Attacked more gaps.”
Ulven was largely in agreement.
“We moved the ball well and we shot well,” he noted. “Our only thing is we just turned it over, and we were a little sloppy with it at times.”
A 6-0, fourth-quarter run, however, put BHS back within six points of the Warriors with about 5 minutes remaining. The Bears' foe responded again, though, scoring the next seven points to hold the home team off.
Ultimately, 10 3-pointers and 60 points weren't enough for Blair against Wahoo.
“We're a great team. We have a lot of potential,” Lawton said. “We've just got to bring it every time.”
