Blair High School National Honor Society (NHS) students and the senior class boys raised money for the Washington County Food Pantry on Thursday night.
The Macho Man Volleyball Tournament returned with the teenagers themselves orchestrating the annual event.
“I don't do a whole lot of the organization,” said BHS counselor and NHS sponsor Vicki Griffin. “The kids do.”
Kaitlyn Johnson and Derek Wang led efforts, signing up teams of senior boys, assigning those teams to the schedule and assigning coaches.
“It's just my job to be here,” Griffin said.
Though there were challenges during the preparation stages, four volleyball teams competed Thursday with a team of teachers and coaches set to play the winners during the night's final matchup.
“We have teams. We have coaches,” Griffin said, crediting her students for their work. “Everything's going, so they did fine.”
The BHS counselor has served as the NHS sponsor for five years and has seen what the senior boys have come up with for team uniforms and costumes each tourney. Thursday's themes and team names were Frat Boys, Black Out Aces, Gangstas and BC's Helpers.
The Helpers — a Brayan Caraveo as Santa with his elves theme — were Griffin's favorite.
“Very, very funny,” she said.
