STAFF REPORT
With the big day almost here, we wanted to remind you of safety tips from the National Safety Council that will help make this Fourth of July a memorable one for all the right reasons. A list of Washington County community displays is included at the end of this story.
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
- Older children should use them only under close adult supervision.
- Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.
- Never hold lit fireworks in your hands.
- Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material.
- Never point point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
- Never ignite devices in a container.
- Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
- Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire.
- Most importantly, never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
If community displays are more your style, the City of Blair will host a fireworks show at dark (9 p.m.-ish) on July 4th on the former Dana College campus.
Arlington’s annual Summer Sizzle event, planned for Saturday, will end with a fireworks show at 10 p.m. at Bell Creek Park.
And the Herman Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department will host a picnic at 6 p.m. on July 12th followed by a fireworks show around 9:30 p.m. at Herman City Park.
