The Arlington Senior Legion baseball team earned its place in the Class B Area 3 Tournament finals Sunday, while Fort Calhoun won a thriller, claiming a chance to face the Eagles with hopes of punching its own finals ticket.
The Post 348 Pioneers earned a 3-2, walk-off victory against the hometown West Point Bombers to keep their season alive. Austin Welchert knocked in Zach Faucher to earn the eight-inning win.
An inning earlier, Jake Seina's steal attempt resulted in the game-tying run with two outs. Calhoun's Justin Myer also starred in the win, pitching six innings with eight strikeouts, according to the Hansen Broadcast Network.
The Pioneers now play Arlington at 7:30 p.m. Monday in West Point for a chance to reach Tuesday's final round, coach Brandon Wynn said. If the Eagles win, though, they eliminate Calhoun and will have two chances to win one game Tuesday with a state tournament berth on the line.
Arlington improved to 3-0 at the district tourney Sunday with an 11-3 win against Waterloo-Valley. The six-inning game, which ended early by run rule, pushed the Eagles into the final round.
Zach Vanek earned the win on the mound. He threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out five.
Dustin Kirk, meanwhile, led the Eagles' offense with three hits and an RBI. Aiden Foreman was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
