In their final tournament before districts, the Fort Calhoun girls wrestling team finished fifth out of 27 schools Friday during the Raymond Central Invite.
Freshman Beckah Gossman, ranked third at 145 pounds in Class B by the NSWCA, led the way, taking first with a 4-0 record in her weight class bracket. The 39-3 Pioneer earned three pins, including a 15-second effort during the first round, and beat both 34-5 Lucia Campbell of Auburn and Lincoln High's Isabel Reyes-Castillo (30-5).
FCHS' Ali Dill, meanwhile, was second at 125 pounds, going 2-0 until a first-place match loss to Aubrie Pehrson of Yutan. The 36-16 Pioneer beat 31-12 Link Lesli Guerra-Avalos during the semifinals.
Four more Calhoun wrestlers earned third and fourth at Raymond Central, too. Madi Larrick was 4-1 at 130 pounds, topping Addie Henry of Auburn by pin during her third-place match.
Annaleigh McLaughlin was 3-1 at 105 poundds, pinning her final opponent in 55 seconds for third, too.
Bella McLaughlin (110) and Anna Rae Hartline (135) were fourth in the weight classes. McLaughlin was 4-2 and Hartline secured a 2-2 tourney record.
FCHS next competes 2 p.m. Friday during the Class B-2 District Tournament at the Falls City Prichard Auditorium. There, coach Lilly Gossman's team will attempt to qualify its first wrestler to the NSAA State Championships in Omaha.
Pioneers go 2-0 at home
Fort Calhoun went 2-0 on its home mats Thursday against Logan View and Tekamah-Herman, too.
The Pioneers beat the Raiders 54-24 and the Tigers 42-36.
Annaleigh McLaughlin, Aundrea Gutierrez and Beckah Gossman won all three contested matches against Logan View. All three won by pin with the longest match lasting just 1:22.
There were seven contested matches between FCHS and Tekamah with the Pioneers securing five wins for the overall victory. Bella McLaughlin earned a third-period pin at 110 pounds, while Dill earned her's at 125 in 1:48. Larrick's pin at 130 took 32 seconds, while Hartline stopped her Tiger opposition in 2:51.
At 145 pounds, Gossman pinned her opponent in just 26 seconds as well.
