A team effort propelled the Fort Calhoun Senior Legion baseball team past Valparaiso on Wednesday, 7-4.
“Lots of good base running and hits all over the lineup,” coach Brandon Wynn said.
The Pioneers improved to 2-2 with the road victory, setting up tonight's game at Blair in a Washington County showdown. The Vets Field doubleheader starts with the Junior Legion game at 5:30 p.m.
Last Wednesday, though, the Pioneers closed out a 4-3, first-inning lead on a play by outfielder Tristan Fuhrman. The Post 348 ballplayer threw out the tying runner at home plate, making sure his team held a lead.
From there, Calhoun relief pitcher Jake Seina stepped in and kept Valparaiso in check, allowing just one run as the Pioneers added to their advantage.
Finally, during the seventh inning, Ty Hallberg stepped in to pitch for Zach Faucher — who'd substituted in for Seina — with the bases loaded and the go-ahead run in the batter's box. He delivered, inducing two groundouts to end the game.
Hallberg also excelled at the plate for Post 348, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
