Washington County swimmers contribute to Tigers' dual win

Fremont High School swimming coach David Struble and his Tigers wanted it.
He put together his best lineup to face the rival Norfolk Panthers during Tuesday's home dual and FHS delivered. Blair High School's Ryleigh Schroeter and Jane Busboom, and Arlington's Lizzie Meyer, Brynn Eckhart, Dathan Hansen and Cade Arnett, contributed as the girls team won 101-85 and the boys were victorious 94.5-81.5.
“The swimmers/divers are working hard and still having great swims,” Struble wrote in his post-dual summary. “The team really wanted to win this meet. They came together and did just that!”
Competition began with three Washington County athletes winning the 200-yard medley relay alongside Tigers teammate Charlotte Vech. Busboom, a sophomore, started with a 50 backstroke before Vech's 50 breaststroke, Schroeter's 50 butterfly and Meyer's race-closing freestyle.
FHS finished the race in just 1:55.04, which is an automatic state cut.
Arnett then added a secondary state time in his 200 medley relay race alongside John Monson, Connor Christ and Landon Lamson before Schroeter was second in the individual 200 freestyle — just ahead of teammate Kiera Spilinek in third.
From there, Meyer was 1st in the 50 freestyle before Arnett and Hansen contributed second- and fourth-place finishes in their own freestyle race. Christ won it ahead of the Arlington Eagles in 23.47 seconds.
The Fremont and Norfolk swimmers took a break after those events as the divers competed on the west end of the Dillon Family Aquatics Center pool. Kallie Johnson finished second for the Tigers, while Eckhart — who last week won the season-opening diving competition — was third.
Meyer later added a 100 freestyle win in 55.85 seconds, while Busboom clocked in at 1:03.09 to win the 100 backstroke. Schroeter and Meyer then closed out the girls' portion of the dual with a 400 free relay win with Vech and Madelyn Buck.
Arnett and Hansen competed in the boys' 400 free relay, too, with Arnett's lineup closing out the dual with a second-place effort. Hansen's crew took third against the Panthers as well.
With the rivalry dual win in hand, Fremont next competes 4:30 p.m. Monday at Millard South.
