FCHS track competes at CSM Open Meet

5 Pioneers win individual events

The Fort Calhoun track and field team competed inside Friday for the second-straight meet to start the season.
The Pioneers opened indoors March 16 at Concordia University in Seward and ran on the College of Saint Mary (CSM) track Friday afternoon in Omaha. The FCHS boys' lineup topped four others during the CSM Open Meet, while the girls were third out of four squads at the Lied Fitness Center Fieldhouse.
Altogether, five Pioneers won individual track and field events inside the Flames' building. Michael Maxon was the meet's top long jumper, covering 18 feet, 11 inches. His teammate, Grayson Bouwman, was second.
Bouwman won the triple jump with a leap of 37-8, too. FCHS' AJ Duros was second.
In the boys' pole vault, Trey King III was second to TJ DeMilt. The first-place finisher cleared a bar set at 9 feet.
On the girls' side, Fort Calhoun's Kaitlyn Thalman won the 3,200-meter run in 14:39.14. Afton Byelick, meanwhile, set a new school record in the pole vault, clearing 7-6. Her teammate, Grace Genoways, was second Friday after setting the previous school record in the event in Seward.
FCHS added pole vault back to its events list this season. The Pioneers next compete 11 a.m. Friday at the Platteview Invitational.
