Zach Fitz grew up attending Arlington Public Schools.
He went to many Washington County Fairs, too, and remembers the annual demolition derby events fondly.
“Sitting in the stands and getting hit with mud,” the Fremont resident said when asked for a favorite memory.
On Sunday, though, Fitz was dealing with a different kind of mud. His team and he played during the Washington County Fair Mud Volleyball Tournament, making dives into dark water for the ball and clearing high serves over the net.
It's the third-straight year Fitz has participated.
“It's just a fun way to hangout with friends and family,” he explained.
Altogether, a full allotment of 32 volleyball teams took part on the mud courts toward the west end of the fairgrounds in Arlington. Teams from across Washington County and outside played, shifting from muddy court to muddy court in bracket play.
The Rahlfs of Blair were there with Dylan, JT and Lyndsay Rahlfs all taking part.
“Just for the fun of it,” Lyndsay said.
She recently moved to Omaha, but continues to enjoy trips back to Washington County for events like the fair.
“You get to see people that you haven't seen for a long time,” Rahlfs said. “You get to catch up with people you went to high school with.”
She was excited to include one friend who'd never been to the Washington County Fair, too.
Altogether, multiple teams across multiple age groups got muddy Sunday morning. It was mud of the mud volleyball variety — not demo derby mud.
