The Arlington boys golf team opened its season Thursday with a triangular at Stone Creek Golf Course in Omaha.
It was the third-place Eagles' first time out on an actual golf course all spring.
“Nothing like it,” first-year head coach Landon Walkenhorst said beforehand. “Going out and competing for the first time.”
Cold temperatures, snow and more kept AHS from its home course in Fremont prior to the opener against Omaha Concordia and Omaha Westview.
“The weather just hasn't been the greatest, at all, for us,” Walkenhorst said. “But that's alright. We'll see what happens here at the dual.”
The bundled-up Eagles finished with 239 strokes across nine holes Thursday on another cold day. Senior Eddie Rosenthal shot a 44 to lead the way.
Before the day's swings, Walkenhorst complimented his low-scorer.
“Eddie, for sure, has earned the spot of No. 1,” he said. “He's definitely a leader for the golf team. I'm really looking forward to him producing good numbers.”
Stokely Lewis, meanwhile, added 55 strokes during Arlington's spring debut. Landon Olson had 68 and Cade Podany carded 72. Schuyler Logemann shot a 78, too.
The triangular was Walkenhorst's first with the Eagles since his own high school graduation in 2018. The sixth grade teacher competed at Concordia University in Seward, but is now back to lead his alma mater this spring.
“I'm just really looking forward to a good golf season here with the guys,” he said. “I've got a lot of good guys out on the team, so I'm really looking forward to see what we can do and what we can put up for scores.”
AHS next competes 9 a.m. Wednesday at The Pines Country Club in Valley during the Douglas County Invite. Walkenhorst started his senior season there in 2018, taking 98 swings across 18 holes. He qualified for his second state tournament near the conclusion of that campaign.
