Coach Janelle Lorsch's softball team had to earn its Class C Subdistrict 2 Tournament title Monday in Tekamah.
The Arlington Eagles (15-11 overall) trailed the top-seeded Tekamah-Herman Tigers 5-1 with just two innings remaining, but scored four runs during the sixth and one in the seventh to claim victory 6-5. AHS' win guaranteed it a spot in the district final round. It'll play Malcolm today in a three-game series to determine which team advances to next week's state tournament. The first game in Malcom begins at 1 p.m.
Eagles senior Kylee Bruning — who finished with three hits and three RBIs against the Tigers — pushed across the go-ahead run Monday against Tekamah with a “check-swing chip shot hit over first base and into right field,” Lorsch said. The hit scored Emery McIntosh, who reached scoring position with a triple.
Hailey Brenn earned the pitching victory for Arlington, striking out 13 Tekamah batters in seven innings of work.
Before coming back to beat the Tigers, however, the second-seeded Eagles decimated No. 3 Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 14-3. Paige Kraemer stood out for her efforts in the win, notching an RBI double, a 2-RBI single and the contact that ended the game by run rule.
AHS scored during every inning, notching five runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third and four during the fourth. Cadie Robinson, Hannah Stahlecker, Keelianne Green, McIntosh and Bruning all contributed either RBIs or extra-base hits during the convincing victory.
