Earlier Saturday, Arlington senior Kate Miller discussed her long-range shot with her father.
He suggested the Eagles' basketball starter use her legs and jump a little a more.
“And, so, I did,” Miller said, grinning after her team's 47-39 home win against Tekamah-Herman. “It worked, I guess.”
AHS' victory was its third straight after an 0-3 start to the season. Miller, a forward, sunk three 3-pointers to help her squad outshoot the Tigers (3-3 overall).
“At the beginning of the season, we weren't taking any shots,” the senior said. “I feel like, each game, we've just taken more and more.”
Willingness had its rewards Saturday. Miller finished with 13 points, while junior Keelianne Green notched a team-high 14. Post player Hailey Brenn added nine, including four on jump shots, while Libby Hegemann and Stella Lewis notched four total points apiece.
“Tonight, this was the best we've shot,” Miller said. “You can tell we've been working on it a lot.”
The Eagles built to their 24-21 first-half advantage with a variety of offense. Green's steal and score put coach Luke Brenn's squad ahead 9-6 early before Lewis' offensive rebound and putback made it 13-8.
Miller started Arlington off with a 3-pointer in the second period before back-to-back jump shots by Lewis and Brenn — and a Green layup — pushed the home squad's lead to 22-14.
Tekamah-Herman cut into the Eagles' advantage, but AHS outscored the Tigers 13-9 in the third to help hold them off. Arlington freshman Hailey O'Daniel also chipped in, using the backboard on her own 3-point make during the early stages of the fourth quarter.
Saturday's win capped the Eagles' pre-Christmas Day schedule. It closed it out with three wins against Nebraska City, Omaha Brownell-Talbot and Tekamah over just eight days.
Miller said communication, the ability to adapt and team chemistry have been key to the turnaround as of late. Her team next plays Dec. 28 at the Lincoln Lutheran holiday tournament.
