After Frankie Rosenbalm knocked down his first late free throw against West Point-Beemer, Nick Smith pulled down a miss on his teammate's second, earning another shot at the line with just 6.5 to go.
Smith, an Arlington boys basketball junior, proceeded to add his own make from the charity stripe, cinching up Thursday's 50-48, season-opening win against the Cadets. Aiden Foreman knocked down one more foul shot with 1.1 seconds to go as the Eagles moved to 1-0 on the season.
Coach Tyler Spitser's team earned the home victory by comeback. It trailed West Point 37-33 going into the fourth period, but outscored the Cadets 17-11 over the final 8 minutes.
Colby Grefe led AHS with 14 points, scoring 12 from beyond the arc. The junior made two of his four 3-pointers during the deciding fourth quarter.
Rosenbalm notched 13 points and Foreman totaled 12, while Smith had seven. Dustin Kirk scored four points, too.
Two days later, Arlington fell to 1-1 with a 54-40 road loss at Class C1 No. 5 Ashland-Greenwood. The Eagles trailed by just five at halftime, but the Bluejays widened their advantage with a 16-10 third quarter.
Foreman led AHS in defeat with 13 points, while Kirk scored 12.
The Eagles next play tonight at Yutan.
