A dog's barks alerted residents at 1753 Colfax St. that their house had caught fire early Friday morning.

Thinking the dog just needed to go outside, the residents found smoke filling the rooms.

Two residents and their animals were able to escape uninjured, Blair Fire Chief Joe Leonard said.

Blair and Kennard firefighters responded to the fire at 5:28 a.m. The fire was on the east side of the house.

"We had a chimney fire that spread to part of the structure of the house," Leonard said. "It was mainly a structure fire near the chimney.”

Leonard alerted the American Red Cross to assist the residents because of gaping holes on either side of the chimney.

"We shut the power off to the residence because some electrical wires got burnt when the fire climbed up the wall," he said.
