The Blair volleyball team is 2-3 through its first five matches of the season.
The Bears traveled to Class B No. 3 Waverly on Tuesday, falling 3-0 for their third loss of the fall. The Vikings won 25-9, 25-9 and 25-16.
Before that trip, though, BHS played three matches Saturday in Wahoo, finishing fourth at the Warriors' tournament.
The Bears started with a 2-1 loss to their host, earning a second-set victory on a Claire Gochanour kill. The attack finished off the 25-21 win, which came after a 25-18 loss in the first set and a 25-19 defeat during the third.
“We split with Wahoo, which is actually a huge step in the right direction for Blair,” coach Becca Mellema said.
To qualify for the third-place match, BHS defeated Crete 22-25, 25-22 and 25-21. Freshman Taylor Mostek closed out the second set win with nine-straight serves as the Bears picked up their second win of the fall.
Lastly, Ord bested Mellema's squad 25-23, 26-24 for third place. Peyton Ogle scored an emphatic block to pull Blair within 24-23 during the second set, but the Bears fell to 2-2 on the season.
“First off, the girls played so well,” Mellema said before the Bears trip to Waverly. “They really fought and had some good comebacks.”
The coach named Schuyler Roewert and Megan McKeon as standouts. Roewert served consistently and avoided errors at the net, while McKeon supplied “incredible” digs.
“Everyone worked hard,” Mellema said. “We wish we could have walked away with more than fourth place, but, for the beginning of the season, it's a great launch pad to build off of.”
