The Blair High School tennis team started its season with varsity matches on the road and junior varsity competition at home.
In both instances Thursday afternoon, the Bears topped Omaha Gross. The varsity lineup won its road dual with the Cougars, 5-4.
“They played really sound in singles,” first-year coach David Christensen said of his team. “And we need some work in doubles.”
Gross won two doubles matches to BHS' one before the Bears went 4-2 in singles matches for the win.
“Overall, really proud of all the girls,” Christensen said.
Jenna Murch-Shafer and Jazmyne Roach claimed Blair's lone doubles victory, 8-2. Alexandra Nilges, Mallory Dreher, Abi Rothlisberger and Hayen Bosanek then went onto pick up singles wins.
Nilges, the Bears' No. 1 singles player and a multiple-time state tourney competitor, claimed her matchup 8-3. Dreher and Rothlisberger won by the same score at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively.
Bosanek, meanwhile, won an 8-0 No. 5 singles matchup against another Cougar.
The Bears' Shelby Kain and Quinn Avila also competed in singles matches, but fell short. Kain paired with Bosanek in doubles play as well.
Murch-Shafer, Roach and Izabella Gaskill also won unscored singles matches against Gross. Nilges and Gaskill won an unscored doubles match, too.
Back home at Stemmermann Park, BHS' junior varsity team won 14 of the 16 singles and doubles matches it played.
The Bears next host South Sioux City today at 4 p.m.
