The Blair varsity tennis team improved its dual record to 4-4 Thursday with a 7-2 road win at Nebraska City.
Coach Matt Aschoff said his Bears could've won more matches during those eight duals, but they've also won some they could've lost. So, overall, he's pleased with the season progress, while aware improvement is possible.
“We can continue to get better,” the coach noted. “I thought we played better today than we did last week, so that was good to see. Have had a lot of girls step up to fill some spots, and all the girls continue to improve.”
Against the Pioneers, Blair proved it was better. The Bears swept three doubles matches and went 4-2 in singles competition. Caitlyn Haggstrom, Addy Nilges, Phoenixx Penke and Bailey Dingfield won solo by scores of 8-4, 8-0, 8-4 and 8-5.
In doubles play, Maicy Lourens and Penke combined for an 8-2 win, while Nilges and Dingfield won their matchup by the same score. Haggstrom and Alexandra Nilges beat their Nebraska opposition 8-5, too.
“The next two weeks will present us with some challenging matches, so that will hopefully prepare us for conference, the Waverly invite and state,” Aschoff said.
BHS hosts varsity matches against Elkhorn this afternoon at Stemmermann Park. Play begins at 4 p.m.
