Blair girls basketball wins, boys fall short at Concordia

Ladwigs lead Bears in scoring

A full week after its loss to Wahoo, the Class B No. 7 Blair girls basketball team returned to the court Tuesday at Omaha Concordia.
The Bears (11-2 overall) scored 46 more points against the Mustangs than it did against the Warriors and won, 72-43.
“Shot a lot better,” BHS coach Matt Aschoff said. “Better ball movement and shot selection tonight.”
Freshman Molly Ladwig led the victorious team with 18 points, including six on buckets made from beyond the 3-point line. Kaitlyn Johnson and Makayla Baughman added 10 apiece, too, as 10 Bears produced points during the 29-point win.
Concordia's Paige Gerhard, meanwhile, led all scorers with 26 points. Her efforts didn't help the Mustangs keep pace with Blair, though, as the road squad led 20-10 after one period and 41-24 at halftime.
Aschoff's team was scheduled back on the court again Thursday, but next faces Crete on Saturday. The home game against the Cardinals starts at 2:30 p.m.

BHS boys fall in OT
Omaha Concordia senior Zac Kulus scored Tuesday's game-winning bucket with 4 seconds left in overtime as the Class C1 No. 4 Mustangs defeated the Blair boys basketball team, 49-47.
The Bears' final effort to tie or win the game failed as they fell to 6-6. The two-point loss was their third straight with all three coming against ranked teams with 10-plus victories.
“Tried to run a break for a last shot to go for the win. Unfortunately, it didn't work out,” BHS coach Chris Whitwer said. “But I am happy with the continued fight from these young men. If they keep this effort up, good things will happen.”
Blair led Concordia 44-42 late during regulation when Luke Ladwig scored a bucket with less than a minute to go. The Mustangs answered, however, leaving the Bears with the ball to end regulation, but their attempt in the final seconds missed.
Ladwig led BHS in defeat with 20 points, while Jacob Czapla scored 10 and Kip Tupa had eight. The Bears were scheduled to face Elkhorn on Thursday and next play a — as of press time — to-be-determined Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament game early next week.
