The Blair boys soccer team battled Madison and a stiff Saturday wind during the Class B-4 Subdistrict Tournament's opening round in South Sioux City.
The Bears beat both to advance, 8-4.
Gabe Zurek and Kip Tupa scored two goals apiece, while Zyler Wyman, Victor Dufau, Gonzalo Fernandez and Quinn Baedke notched one each to win. BHS (10-5 overall) will try to find the net more 6 p.m. tonight when it faces the host SSC Cardinals (8-8) in the subdistrict final.
The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 first-half lead Saturday before the Dragons pulled within 5-2 by the halftime break. Facing the wind during the second half, Blair coach Curt Scott said his team worked to maintain possession with two-touch passes.
“Anything played out from the goalie or the defensive big died (in the wind),” he said.
Even with that hindrance, Blair outscored the Dragons 3-2 during the final 40 minutes, earning a four-goal victory.
“We should have had more,” Scott said in regards to scoring, though he complimented his squad's opposition. “Credit to Madison, they never gave up.”
