The odds were against a 5-0 start for the Class B No. 6 Blair boys soccer team Thursday night.
Yet coach Curt Scott's Bears got it done. It took overtime, but the hometown 11 earned their fifth win, besting Waverly 4-3 at Krantz Field.
“At the end of the game, even down a goal, you've just always got to think there's always a chance,” BHS senior Gabe Zurek said. “All they way up until the end.”
Down 3-2 with just 3:29 left during the second 10-minute overtime period, the wing set up for a long free kick and hammered it over the Vikings' keeper to even the score.
Just 2:42 later, Zurek had a 1-on-1 chance to put the Bears ahead. The senior struck the penalty kick to the back of the net, capitalizing on a Waverly infraction in the box.
Blair scored the game-winning goal with just 47 seconds left in overtime after scoring their first goal of Thursday's match with 51 seconds left in the first half. Senior Ethan Smith sent a high, crossing pass into the box where Zurek used his head to even the match at 1. The goal was the first of three for the senior, who has 13 through just five games this spring.
The Bears' Kip Tupa also scored, putting the home team ahead 2-1 during the 49th minute on a rebound. The Vikings equaled BHS in the 66th on Carson Brentlinger's goal, but Zurek's team improved to 5-0 anyway.
“I'm having a lot of fun,” he said. “I'm not going to lie, I didn't know what was going to happen this season, but we're playing really good.”
The Bears were to host Nebraska City on Monday before today's home match against Plattsmouth. The latter starts at 6:30 p.m.
