The Blair boys basketball team lost its return from COVID-19 quarantine Friday.
The Bears led at home against Seward early, 8-4, but lost 59-36 as they struggled to make shots against the Bluejays.
“We're kind of struggling through some adversity,” Whitwer said, not making his point about the nine-day layoff. “(We're) trying to get ourselves back after some tough losses. We're just not gelling.”
The 23-point loss to 6-13 Seward was BHS' fourth-straight. It was shorthanded Friday, but it also didn't get a strong showing from the field from its available players.
“We're getting looks,” Whitwer said. “Shots just aren't falling. Our percentages have really dropped and it's not because we don't shoot in practice.”
Blair actually started out the game with a lead, though. Four Nolan Ulrich points, and shot makes by Luke Ladwig and Cade Ulven, had the Bears out front 8-4 early.
From there, though, the Bluejays outscored Whitwer's team 19-6 before halftime.
Down 35-21 during the third period, BHS earned some momentum when Ladwig scored back-to-back buckets — including one off of a Morgan Rump Steal — to pull back within 10. The boost was short-lived, though, after a Seward player knocked down a 3-pointer.
“I feel bad for them because it's not because they're not trying,” Whitwer said of his squad. “Their effort is good. The leadership in the locker room, I have good things to say.”
The Bears had just one practice to prepare for Seward. Their Saturday game against Crete was then postponed due to weather.
