Blair High School senior Anna Moore excelled on her second 18 holes of the NSAA Class B State Golf Championships on Tuesday, earning a state medal to cap her Bears career.
“The last four holes, I knew exactly what I had to do,” she said.
Moore made two par putts and two bogeys in the end, solidifying her spot at No. 15 in the individual standings. She finished with 189 strokes over two days and 36 holes at Scotts Bluff Country Club, while teammate Mallory Stirek took 198 swings to tie for 24th out of the 75 golfers overall.
It almost never happened, though.
The Bears' second day in Scottsbluff started with a weather delay and ended that way, too. Just after both Moore and Stirek finished up their rounds, play stopped for a second time with golfers left on the course.
“Everybody has one hole left,” BHS coach Ross Udey said at the time. He was waiting to see what NSAA officials decided for the rest of the tournament.
In the past, rain cancellations have reverted championship scores back to single-day accomplishments, meaning Moore's second-day efforts would have been for naught.
That same scenario, however, would have meant Stirek had medaled. The junior carded 93 strokes on Monday and was 12th going into the second round.
“It's a coin flip,” Udey said.
The inclement weather cleared enough, however, taking the decision out of the NSAA's hands. Moore medaled in her final chance at the state tournament, while Stirek can earn her way back again during the 2022 season.
“Very proud of them both,” Udey said. “They battled. Both of them represented the school well.”
Moore sunk seven par shots during her two-day state tournament stay, including five Tuesday.
“Anna played so well,” her coach added.
Moore said she hit the ball straight, and improved her chipping and putting during the second 18 holes. The three-time state qualifier made multiple 15-foot putts.
Though she wasn't aware of where she was in the standings, the senior said she could tell she was in contention with how her parents and Udey were reacting when she hit the cup.
Stirek, meanwhile, finished her third state tournament appearance with four made shots for par. She completed her first nine holes Monday in just 46 swings, too.
Overall, Elkhorn North followed up its district title at River Wilds Golf Club in Blair with a state championship in western Nebraska. The Wolves finished with 677 team strokes, while their individual champ — Julia Karmazin — took just 147.
Due to her play on the final 18 holes, and the delay before she found out for sure that those holes counted, Moore said the 2021 state golf tournament was one she wouldn't soon forget.
“It was memorable,” she confirmed.
