The Arlington boys basketball team didn't play down to its competition Saturday afternoon, routing Omaha Brownell-Talbot 54-11.
The Eagles (1-3 overall) started the game on an 11-0 run, led 33-8 at halftime and picked up their first win of the season. Senior Darren Olson scored nine of AHS' first 19 points, but said defense was key to the 43-point victory. The 11 points allowed are a modern day school record.
“We picked up on defense a lot this week,” he said. “The big emphasis was closing out and stuff like that.”
The Raiders — who entered the game 3-0 with wins against Cornerstone Christian, Heartland Christian (Iowa) and Whiting (Iowa) — scored six points during the first period, but just five after it. They had just one field goal and a free throw the entire second half.
Eagles sophomore Trent Koger, meanwhile, outscored Brownell-Talbot by himself. He had 14 points, notching 10 of the first 19 with Olson as coach Tyler Spitser's only other scorer early.
“All that hard work's paying off,” Olson said.
The senior finished with 11 points total, while Weston Wollberg added 12, too. Wollberg, a 6-foot-5 senior, was the first Arlington scorer besides Olson and Koger. He made four buckets during the second period before Oliver Ladehoff and Desmond Cole ended the half with two more.
The Eagles were scheduled to play Nebraska City a night earlier on Friday, but the Pioneers postponed the game due to illness. AHS next competes today against Douglas County West. The home game tips at approximately 7:30 p.m.
