The Arlington Junior Legion baseball team battled its host into extra innings Saturday during the Ralph Bishop League (RBL) Tournament championship game.
“Our kids did not quit,” coach Ed Menking said.
But they did fall just short, dropping a 5-4, eight-inning game at Pierce. The Eagles finished their tourney run 3-1, defeating Tekamah-Herman, Pender and Columbus Lakeview before the competitive finale.
Against Pierce, Dustin Kirk led Post 71 with three RBIs on a 1-for-4 night, coach Tyler Stender noted. Trevor Denker, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a base on balls.
Defensively, pitcher Tyler Ott three four innings for Arlington. Nick Smith, meanwhile, threw the other 3 2/3 before the home team earned its walk-off tourney title.
The Eagle Juniors reached the RBL championship game with a 11-4 home win against Columbus Lakeview on July 1. Kirk struck out 11 batters over 5 2/3 innings to earn the pitching victory.
Kaden Pittman led the Post 71's efforts from the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with a double. Blaine Vogt was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Class B Area 2 Tournament starts today in Ashland. Arlington's first-round matchup was unavailable as of press time.

Seniors scrimmage Waterloo-Valley
After their early exit from the RBL Tournament, the Arlington Seniors planned to play an unofficial, nine-inning game at Waterloo-Valley on Tuesday.
“Just getting our work in,” Menking said.
The Eagles started fast with seven runs through the first three innings to Valley's one. Josh Miller and Isaac Foust hit a two-RBI single and an RBI double during the first frame, respectively.
In the second, Post 71's Tanner Pittman notched a two-RBI triple before Aiden Foreman knocked him in.
Pitcher Braden Rump pitched the first two innings without allowing a hit.
