After falling behind Boys Town 21-0 Friday, the Arlington football team finally got on the board 27 seconds before halftime.
The Eagles' defense had earned a rare first-half stop, setting up the offense with a short field to capitalize on. Quarterback Logan Kaup and his teammates did, pulling AHS within two scores and securing momentum going into the second half.
Coach Colter Mattson decided the Eagles would go for even more, attempting an onside kick to start the third quarter. It failed and the Cowboys scored again. They won on the road, 41-15.
“We just needed to get something going. We needed a big play,” Mattson said after the game. “We were hoping to get one there.”
Arlington didn't and fell to 4-4 a half of football later. Boys Town, meanwhile, won its fifth-straight game, improving to 5-3.
“Even though the score looked like it did, I think we played a really solid game besides, you know, some of the missed tackles and stuff,” Mattson said.
The Cowboys earned their three-score lead early when TJ Covington broke loose. The speedy back ran inside runs and turned them into outside ones, racing away from Eagle defenders to the sidelines.
“We were where we needed to be, I would say, a majority of the time,” Mattson said, crediting Covington for the breakout runs. “That kid's a heck of a running back. He's patient.”
The Boys Town standout scored from 9 yards out during the first quarter before his 10-yarder during the second pushed the Cowboys' lead to 21-7.
“Their yards after contact didn't help the cause any,” Mattson added.
The Eagles finally earned a stop defensively with 1:27 left during the second quarter. Their opposition had to punt from inside its own 10 yard line, giving AHS a chance to cut into the lead with a short field.
After Kaup connected with receiver Dustin Kirk on a long pass down to the 1 yard line, the QB ran it in himself.
The Arlington signal caller ran the ball into the end zone again during the third, but his two-point conversion toss to Kirk only pulled the Eagles within 19, 34-15. It was too little, too late.
Boys Town, meanwhile, scored once more during the fourth quarter for good measure, maintaining its spotless district record in the process.
AHS is 2-2 in Class C1 District 3 play. It faces Douglas County West in the regular season finale this Friday. The opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the Eagles' home field.
