Holly Kubicek and Washington County members of the Nebraska Bugeaters hockey team recently won medals during Cornhusker State Games competition on ice.
Kubicek, a 7-year-old figure skater from Fort Calhoun, claimed two first-place gold medals with her efforts in the compulsory moves and basic free skate categories. The Blade & Edge Figure Skating Club athlete performed to music from the movie “Zootopia” — Shakira's “Try Everything” — during the free skate competition.
Maxwell Rump, and Carly and Tanner Horacek, meanwhile, were players on the second-place age 16 and younger Bugeaters, who competed in the State Games' ice hockey tournament at Motto McLean Ice Arena in Omaha last month. The Nebraska squad fell to the Northern Colorado Junior Eagles in the Bantam Division final, 3-1.
The Horacek siblings will be sophomores at Blair High School this fall, while Rump is an Otte Blair Middle School student. The Bugeaters consisted of players from Bennington, Louisville, Omaha and Elkhorn, too.
