Stuck in a 0-0 slog against Waterloo/Valley on Wednesday, the Fort Calhoun Senior Legion baseball team finally got going during the bottom of the fifth inning.
All-state Pioneer Tylan Conner hit a bounding ball up the middle of the infield and the home team was off to the races. Coach Brandon Wynn's team scored three runs in the fifth frame and two more during the sixth in the 5-0 victory, their fourth of the summer season.
“We've done a fairly decent job all season of adjusting,” said Post 348 slugger Justin Myer.
The recent FCHS grad said the Pioneers had to get comfortable with the pitch speed they were seeing from Waterloo/Valley pitcher Joe Graham before they could get going. Once they did, the momentum carried them to the win.
“It helps us tremendously,” Myer added.
Did the energy help him clear the fence on his sixth inning homer, though?
“That was all me,” he said, cracking a smile.
Myer's slam over the left field boundary was good for Post 348's fourth run. Austin Welchert's sacrifice later scored Conner, who doubled to the fence, for the 5-0 lead.
The Pioneers' scoring spurt, however, started with Dillon Dierks thwarting a double-play attempt in the fifth. After Conner, Welchert and Harrison Schmitt loaded the bases with one out, the speedy Senior player put the ball in play and raced to first base.
Waterloo/Valley earned a force out at second base, but Dierks made it to the bag and Conner scored for a 1-0 advantage.
“It's not too often I actually hit it,” Dierks said, smiling. “I'm always running hard especially over to first because, I get told a lot, I have a lot of speed. So, I make sure I use it.”
The Calhoun baserunner used it again when Ty Hallberg hit a single to the opposite field, plating both Pioneers left on base. Dierks slid in safe, cleats first, for a 3-0 lead.
“I did see Brandon waving me on, so that's when I kind of kicked it into gear and then got going,” he said.
Post 348's Jake Seina pitched the complete game shutout, striking out eight batters. He allowed just five hits as the Fort Calhoun Seniors improved to 4-2.
Waterloo/Valley, meanwhile, won the Juniors game beforehand.
