Nine Blair wrestlers traveled to the suburbs of Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday to tests themselves during the Ed Winger Classic at Urbandale High School.
Coach Erich Warner's shorthanded lineup finished 15th out of 23 teams with three medalists — Hudson Loges, Charlie Powers and Luke Frost. The Bears scored 51.5 team points, while 14th-place Waukee had 54.5. Southeast Polk won the tournament with 246.5 points.
Loges and Powers each earned third-place finishes in their weight classes. Loges, a freshman, went 4-1, dropping his semifinals match to Bettendorf's Timothy Koester, but coming back for two more wins and a bronze medal. He bested Johnston's Caden Leonard by sudden victory in his final match.
Powers, meanwhile, was 4-1 at 160 pounds. The senior lost his quarterfinals match, but won three straight to earn bronze, including two by 11-1 major decisions.
At 113 pounds, Frost was 3-2. The 32-9 wrestler won his fifth-place match against Dowling Catholic's Sevastian Soto by 9-5 decision.
Blair's Atticus Dick, Yoan Camejo, Noah Kuefler and Jim Rasmussen also earned wins at Urbandale. Rasmussen and Kuefler notched two of the Bears' three pins on the day with Loges notching the other.
BHS next competes Friday at a Millard West triangular. Matches start at 5 p.m.
