Coach David Struble was pleased with his Fremont Tigers' showing Friday during the NSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships in Lincoln.
“Great swims and effort from both our girls and boys teams,” he said. “Several swims coming back to finals on Saturday.”
Among the Tigers headed back to the Bob Devaney Sports Center pool were two of the three Arlington Eagles competing, Josh Iossi and Elisabeth Meyer. Iossi's 200-yard freestyle relay team finished 10th during the preliminary round, earning a spot in the consolation finals with a time of 1:31.16 — a new Fremont record. The team, consisting of Connor Christ, John Monson, Nathaniel McClellan and the AHS senior finished 11th overall.
Meyer, meanwhile, made Saturday's competition with her ninth-place 200 freestyle relay team. It finished ninth in 1:41.48 Friday with Madelyn Buck, Lucy Dillon, Karsen Jesse and the Arlington freshman. It then earned 10th Saturday with a 1:41.46.
Both Iossi and Meyer competed in second events as well during Friday's prelims. Iossi was joined in the 400 free relay by fellow Eagle Cade Arnett as well as Ethan Lefler and Landon Lamson. The lineup finished 22nd in 3:35.71.
Meyer's FHS 200 medley relay team with Ellie Schiemann, Addie Schiemann and Grace Blick finished 24th in 2:02.98.
The 2021 NSAA Championships marked the third-straight year Arlington athletes have competed at state swimming. The Eagles have competed in swimming alongside Fremont since the 2018-2019 season.
