Washington County has begun its march through the high school winter sports season and so, too, has our Nannen & Harte Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week process.
Our photo catalogue for Wyatt Appel, Josie Biffar and Grace Jones may not by A-plus — I’ll work on that — but their first-week efforts certainly were. They’re my first winter season picks for Athlete at the Week from Fort Calhoun, Blair and Arlington High School and for good reason. Check back here at enterprisepub.com/sports Wednesday to see who takes overall county honors.
First, though, please let me let you know why Appel, Biffar and Jones are to be celebrated this week.

Wyatt Appel, Fort Calhoun basketball: The senior hooper broke out with his performance in the post against Fremont Bergan during a season-opening Pioneers win. He had 16 points and eighth rebounds, highlighting the road victory with a rim-rattling two-handed jam.

Josie Biffar, Blair wrestling: The 135-pound senior made Blair High School history Thursday, opening the first-year, NSAA-sanctioned girls team’s season with a pin in the program’s first-ever match. Through two duals and a Bennington tournament, she shares the team lead in wins (4) with sophomore Alison Wheeler.

Grace Jones, Arlington wrestling: Like Biffar, Grace Jones owns the Arlington High School girls wrestling team’s first-ever win. She started her career on the mat with a first-place finish at the Bennington Invitational — as did Carisa Brazelton — but she did it with three wins and three pins.

Thanks for reading and please congratulate these kids when you see them.
