On May 24, 1974, Nebraska Gov. J. James Exon formally dedicated the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station (FCS). During his dedicatory comments, Exon commended the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) for its "leadership in the field of energy" and for the "timely planning" of its construction.
"Those who occupy leadership positions in the field of energy must explore alternative sources of energy so that we might eliminate our dependance on depletable fossil fuels," he said. "Contrary to the opinion of many extremists, we do not have to abandon the environment for the sake of energy."
