A rural Fort Calhoun teenager has earned her "letter jacket" in a sport not offered at area high schools.
Dallas Van Stratten, daughter of Dale and Lisa Van Stratten, has earned her High School Equestrian Athlete letter for the 2009/2010 year.
Starting with the 2009/2010 school year, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) began recognizing equestrian high school athletes for their accomplishments with a new varsity lettering program.
The program is open to all equestrian athletes in all breeds and all disciplines who are enrolled in grades 9-12, are currently USEF members, have a minimum of 100 hours of training and competing, and compete in two USEF licensed competitions. The program runs June 1 to May 31 of each year. Students must enroll in the program.
As a freshman at Blair High School, Van Stratten is a member of the Nebraska Dressage Association and has been competing in the discipline of dressage since she was 6 years old. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation at the Training Level, and is also ranked No. 1 in the breed awards for the KWPN of North America (Dutch Warmblood) at the training level.
"She easily met the minimum 100 hours of training and competitions in 2009," notes Lisa Van Stratten. "Dallas competed in USEF-rated dressage shows at Mason City, Iowa, Lincoln, and Chicago, Ill. She looks forward to another successful year as she begins training with her new horse, an 8-year-old Dutch Warmblood."
