Although it's still nearly six weeks away, organizers are getting into high gear for the 53rd annual MCH Auxiliary Rummage Sale.
Billed as the "Midwest's Largest Rummage Sale," the event has been slated for Thursday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Arlington.
Over the years, the hugely successful sale has raised well over a million dollars for equipment and other needs at Blair's Memorial Community Hospital.
"We kept our goal this year at $65,000, the same as last year," said longtime volunteer Ardis Grace. "We made $75,000 last year, but with the economy the way it is, we decided not to raise our goal any higher."
The schedule for the sale will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, with a bag sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday to conclude the event.
One thing missing from this year's sale will be an antique auction. However, bargain hounds will still have a chance to buy antiques that have been donated.
"There will be an antique 'department'," explained Grace. "Each item will be priced to sell by a local expert."
Last year, Grace said, a number of people placed bids on a "bid card."
"They were all called, but 30 to 40 of them did not pick up the items and pay for them when they had the high bid," said Grace. "So, this year, we are trying something different."
One thing that isn't different from past years is the need for volunteers. Right now, volunteers are needed to help sort merchandise at the MCH Auxiliary Warehouse, and scores of volunteers will be needed during the sale, including help needed to transport sale items from the warehouse to the fairgrounds.
