Scott Kerber Sports Editor
The Blair Legion Seniors seems to be just a couple degrees off center Tuesday night, as what had been a very solid defensive team throughout the tournament got sloppy and lost to Roncalli 8-3 in the District finals.
Blair starting pitcher Derek Ogle pitched well overall, but his control was less then pinpoint as he worked with just two days rest after throwing a complete game Saturday.
But the real issue was the defense. Ball that were fielded cleanly over the previous course of the tournament were muffed with a degree of regularity.
"Our starting pitching has been the strength of our team all year," said Blair head coach Scott Nicholson. "And pitching wasn't our problem tonight. Our defense was. That, and the fact that we were only able to score two runs (they actually scored three, with a scratch run scoring in the seventh). You're not going to win too many games when you only score three runs.
Once again, as it had been with West Point earlier in the tournament, it was a left hander that gave the Blair hitters fits.
Still, in spite of some frustrating times this year, the Blair Seniors put together a better season than Nicholson expected at the start of the season.
"I had the over-under at about eight wins, when I saw how many guys had decided not to play this summer. We finished with 16 wins. It was a frustrating year, when you start to think about how good we could have been if a few of those other guys had played. But the guys that did play played hard.
