| Blair Seniors to play for District title Wakefield shuts out Bennington
Scott Kerber Sports Editor
Blake Wakefield tossed a two-hit shutout against Bennington Monday night as the Blair Seniors won the losers bracket semifinals and will face winners bracket finalist Roncalli in the District finals Tuesday. Blair would need to win games at both 5:30 and 8 p.m. to prevail as District champs.
Wakefield consistently pounded the strike zone all night, and received excellent defensive support in collecting the 5-0 victory.
Although the Blair hitters didn't exactly tear the cover off the ball, Ryan Garder and Andrew Pierce combined for five hits. Pierce was a perfect 3-for-3, with two doubles and three RBIs -- two of the RBIs being Garder's two runs scored.
Blair has now posted wins of 10-0, 8-2, 7-1 and 5-0 since their opening-round 7-2 loss to Roncalli last Thursday.
"This is easily the best baseball we've played all season," said head coach Scott Nicholson. "We've had pretty good pitching all year, but right now we're fielding really well and hitting the ball well enough."
The team has also been playing heads-up ball and running the bases aggressively, which has led to extra runs on more than one occasion.
