| 5/24/2010 4:47:00 PM | Email this article Print this article | Gateway Days set June 10-13 June is almost here and that means it's time once again for Gateway to the West Days in Blair.
The four-day festival sponsored by the Blair Area Chamber of Commerce will take place June 10-13.
On Thursday, June 10, the Taste of Blair and a summer concert by the Blair Community Band will kick off Gateway to the West Days. The Taste of Blair is set for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dana College and will feature the fare of several local restaurants.
The Blair Community Band will present a free summer concert in Dana's Gardner Hawks Center at 7 p.m.
The Merriam Midway will open at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Several Blair businesses and the Blair Area Chamber of Commerce will pre-sell discounted carnival tickets. Presale carnival tickets are sold at a 50 percent discount. Wristband Day is Friday, June 11, and begins at noon. This year, the carnival will run through Sunday evening, with another wristband special planned for Sunday.
On Friday, June 11, "Jazz in the Park" will begin at 6 p.m. at Steyer Park. The two-hour performance is sponsored by American Broadband and Memorial Community Hospital and will feature the Steve Raybine Orchestra. The concert is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their blankets and chairs for this outdoor concert. The Blair Kiwanis Club will host a barbecue from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Steyer Park. The Tri M Music Honor Society from Blair High School will host a dessert tent at the same time.
On Saturday, June 12, the Gateway to the West Walk/Run will start at 8 a.m. at The Blair Family YMCA. The Blair Elite Mile will be run prior to the start of the annual parade, along the parade route in downtown Blair.
The Midwest Early Corvette Club is sponsoring a car show from 9 a.m. to noon. The annual craft show will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both events will be around the Washington County Courthouse at 16th and Colfax streets. Registration forms for both events are available at the chamber office at 1646 Washington Street.
The beer garden opens at 10 a.m. at the Blair Fire Hall, and a doubles Horseshoe tournament will begin at the same time at Lions Park.
The theme for this year's Gateway to the West Parade is "Let the Games Begin" and the parade will start at 1 p.m. Participants are encouraged to design their floats with "games" in mind.
At 3 p.m. at the fire hall, local volunteer fire departments will be on hand for the water fights. A street dance begins at 9 p.m. at the fire hall and will feature music by The Charm School Dropouts. The dance ends at 12:30 a.m.
On Sunday, June 13, Masonic Lodge 21 will host a biscuits & gravy breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge and the final event of the Gateway to the West Days will be a BBQ on the House, sponsored by Woodhouse Auto Family, free to the public, from noon to 2 p.m. at Steyer Park.
